This review examines the Morakniv Garberg, a fixed blade knife designed for tough use.

First Impressions

I’ve had a few Morakniv knives before, and there’s a few things I really like about this budget friendly option. Even if you’re very good at sharpening, there’s a part of me that struggles to really put expensive blades through their paces during hard field use. Whereas I don’t mind taking a less expensive blade and really testing the capability and durability, so I’m more likely to actually throw it into my backpack and use it!

The Garberg boasts a full-tang construction, making it exceptionally strong. This is a feature not typically found on Mora knives, and it positions the Garberg as a serious tool for survival, fieldcraft, and even fighting tasks.

The knife arrives in a simple gray box and includes a polymer sheath. The Garberg itself is available in two blade options: carbon steel with a Diamond Like Coating (DLC) finish, or stainless steel.

Testing the Garberg

We put the Garberg through its paces with a variety of tasks, including cutting rope, cardboard, and clearing brush. The Garberg’s sharp blade made easy work of these materials. The ergonomic handle with a diamond texture provided a comfortable grip, even during extended use. I’ve taken it camping a few times and one of my buddies liked it so much he bought one for himself when we got back.

The full-tang construction proved its worth, as the Garberg felt solid and secure in our hands. The flat back of the blade facilitated fire starting with a ferro rod and batoning wood for kindling. While I’m a firm believer that it’s best to bring lighter wherever you go, it doesn’t hurt to have an extra option on how you can make a spark in a pinch .

What We Liked

  • Full-tang construction for exceptional strength
  • Sharp, scandi-grind blade that excels at cutting
  • Comfortable, ergonomic handle
  • DLC finish on the carbon steel blade provides an attractive and protective layer

What We Could Do Without

  • While I appreciate the ruggedness of the sheath, it is bulky if you’re wearing it on your belt.
  • A jimping on the spine of the blade would provide better control for precise cuts.
  • The diamond texture on the handle could be extended for better grip in wet or oily conditions.

Overall Verdict

The Morakniv Garberg is an excellent fixed-blade knife for those seeking a simple, no-frills tool for various tasks at a budget friendly price point. Its well-balanced design, comfortable handle, and sharp blade make it a great choice for everyday carry, outdoor adventures, or survival situations. While the sheath could be improved, the Garberg’s overall performance and quality construction make it a great value.
